Christina Jooste’s deep passion for young people derives from her own struggles in her youth when she did not have access to much needed support structures. She began her career at a crèche called The Little People in Somerset West and attained qualifications in Early Chldhood Development. This is where “my love for the kids just grew so much”. Christina came to Usiko in 2008 as a volunteer and completed the mentor training. In 2009 she became involved with the girls’ school-based at the high schools in Jamestown and Cloetesville on a part-time basis. She also became involved in the diversion programme from 2009 until 2011. In 2011 she became an Usiko staff member and now anchors the girls’ school-based programmes.
“Working for Usiko has really helped me to grow as an individual and has made me so much stronger as a woman. I have an opportunity to empower our young girls to reach for their dreams and not to let circumstances determine their destiny or direction!” Her hobbies include hiking in the mountain, listening to all kinds of music and making food. She has acquired training as chef and has aspirations of opening up her own home one day for children in need of care. Her wilderness name is Soaring Eagle.
